Congo Ebola outbreak passes 2,000 deaths

Government data show that more than 2,000 people have died in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's fast-growing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.

The figures reported on Tuesday recorded 4,381 confirmed cases and 2,011 deaths. The resulting fatality rate is about 46 per cent, higher than the rate recorded during the West African epidemic that ended in 2016.

The outbreak was declared on 15 May, although genetic sequencing indicates that transmission began in February. It took about nine weeks for the first 1,000 deaths to be recorded and about three more weeks for the second 1,000.

The outbreak is now the second largest Ebola epidemic on record, while health teams are working without an approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain.

A different strain limits the response

Vaccines and treatments used against the Zaire strain are not approved for Bundibugyo Ebola. Clinical trials of experimental candidates have started in Ituri province, placing research work inside an active emergency where speed, consent and reliable follow-up all matter.

Health teams are tracing contacts, isolating suspected cases and supporting treatment centres across affected areas. The work depends on finding people before symptoms produce further chains of transmission, often in places where roads, communications and health services are thin.

The warning reflects the speed of recent growth. A case count is a delayed picture of infections that have already occurred, so a rising total can continue even while control measures are being expanded.

Public-health teams must also explain the trials to affected communities. Experimental care cannot replace surveillance, safe isolation and prompt reporting while evidence on the new candidates is still being collected.

Contact tracing remains decisive

Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. That makes rapid isolation and the monitoring of contacts central to stopping transmission. Missed contacts can carry the virus into another household or community before responders know that the chain has moved.

Fear and mistrust can also slow reporting. Families may avoid treatment centres or resist contact monitoring when messages are unclear, when staff arrive late or when earlier promises of care have not been met.

The immediate measure of progress will be whether new cases begin to fall and whether contact teams can keep pace. Until both happen, the rising death count shows that the outbreak is still moving faster than the response.
