Bristol Brabazon station enters its final stages before an autumn opening

Network Rail says the new Bristol Brabazon station has entered the final stages of construction ahead of opening to passengers this autumn, and has invited residents to a drop-in event on Tuesday 22 September to hear what comes next. The station sits in Brabazon, the new city district being built on the former Filton Airfield. The announcement was made on Friday 4 September 2026.
What has been built since the summer
The announcement sets out the sequence on site. The footbridge was installed at the start of the summer. Since then coping stones have been laid along the platform edges, the lift shafts have been clad and the first layer of platform surfacing has been installed. Over the past few weeks the platform canopy has been erected, and work has continued on fitting out the station with ticket machines, benches and passenger information screens.
That is the whole of the published progress record. No contractor is named, no contract value is given and no programme beyond the words "this autumn" is stated. The announcement is a milestone notice from the infrastructure owner, not a contract award, and it should be read as one.
The station is mainly funded by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, with contributions from South Gloucestershire Council, Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council and GWR. Network Rail describes itself as a key partner. The split between those contributions is not published.
The drop-in event
Network Rail and its partners are inviting residents and anyone with an interest in the project to a community drop-in session from 3pm to 7pm on Tuesday 22 September at the Pegasus Room, Spitfire Hangar, first floor, Frise Street, Brabazon, BS34 4SE. The announcement says people can pop in at any time to find out the latest information and speak with the project team.
The stated purpose is progress on the new station and the next steps ahead of its opening. Nothing in the announcement suggests the event is a consultation on any further decision.
What opening means for the line
The announcement states that Bristol Brabazon station will open to passengers this autumn, and that further work is planned ahead of the opening of the new Aviva Arena in 2028. It does not describe that further work.
It also states that the opening of the station and the return of passenger services on the Henbury Line this autumn will reconnect communities for the first time since 1964, and that the area is one of Britain's fastest growing. Both are Network Rail's own statements and neither is supported on the announcement by figures.

The announcement carries two photographs, one captioned as the station construction on course for completion this autumn and one of the footbridge installation on the former airfield.
Not on the record: the main contractor, the design team, the contract value, the form of contract, the date of the first train and the scope of the work still to come before the arena opens in 2028. A supplier looking for the next package on this line will not find it in this notice. The notice records that a station is nearly finished and that the public is being told so.
