Checking a Toronto job offer before you travel

Salary, tax, rent, health waiting points, school support and first-month cash.

Practical city guide

Toronto starting points

Toronto salary should be tested after tax, rent, transit or car cost, health gap and school fees where private education is planned. Confirm whether the role sits with a Canadian employer, client secondment, project office or regional function. Use the rent table early. Downtown, Midtown, North York, Etobicoke and premium central searches produce different cash outcomes.

Toronto starting points

Model the Toronto offer using expected tax deductions and the household's chosen housing, travel, health and education routes. Identify the employing entity and record whether the move is a Canadian hire, client secondment, project appointment or regional assignment. Compare Downtown, Midtown, North York, Etobicoke and other central options as separate combinations of rent, transit, parking and journey time.

Ask for the benefit booklet, family cover, dental, vision, prescription terms, pension and relocation repayment clause. Bonus timing, probation, termination notice and relocation clawback should be read before accepting. Never value a discretionary bonus as guaranteed rent or school money. The comparator should separate base salary, housing, benefits, school, transport and first-month cash. Where the permit is employer-specific, keep employer, occupation and work-location records beside the offer model.

Match the offer to the employer-specific permit case

Write the named employing company, occupation, normal work location, salary, hours and start date from the offer on one schedule. Compare that schedule with the contract and the employer material prepared for the permit application. The employer-specific permit page identifies employer, location and occupation as controlling permit information. Resolve a difference before acceptance rather than assuming that the highest package figure cures it.

Ask whether the job needs a labour market impact assessment or follows an exempt route, and record what the employer must supply. Keep commercial negotiation separate from the immigration process. A client appointment, future project or group-company brand may explain the business case, but it does not replace the legal employing entity or the conditions that will appear on the permit.

If the Toronto appointment depends on one project, record what happens after completion, suspension or reassignment. Check the normal workplace and the policy for travel to client premises and sites. Never value a mobility promise until the employer explains how a proposed change will be handled under the contract and the worker's immigration route.

Convert the package into dependable Canadian payroll cash

Separate base salary, fixed cash allowances, bonus, pension, relocation, education support, insurance and travel benefits. Keep employer-paid suppliers and employee reimbursements in different columns. Convert recurring cash to the stated pay frequency and place one-off amounts on their real dates. A discretionary bonus and an unapproved expense claim remain outside dependable monthly income.

The current Ontario payroll guide covers federal and provincial tax deductions, CPP and EI for the common pay periods. Use the actual salary, pay cycle and declarations with the official calculator or applicable tables. Label the result as a planning estimate. Never quote one bracket rate as the employee's total deduction or treat gross salary as household spending money.

Test the first pay period separately because a mid-period start, payroll cut-off or benefit deduction can change it. Obtain the expected first pay date and the employer's treatment of salary, allowances and expenses. After payment, reconcile the payslip and bank credit before replacing the accepted-offer model.

Test family eligibility before valuing relocation support

List each family member's intended Canadian status and the employer support offered for applications, documents, travel and temporary accommodation. The current open-work-permit rules for family members turn on the principal worker's pathway, occupation category, permit validity and the relative's own requirements. Never price a partner's future earnings into the offer case before the relevant eligibility and application route are checked.

Record the occupation code and TEER category used for the employee and the remaining validity required when a spouse or common-law partner applies under the relevant measure. Keep children and adults on separate lines. A relative who is not eligible for that open-work-permit measure may need another work, study or visitor route, with different records and cost.

Distinguish employer assistance from employer payment. A letter, access to a provider and reimbursement after approval are different benefits. Put each confirmed payment on its expected date and leave any conditional credit outside arrival cash until the written policy and approval route support it.

Price housing from the proposed Ontario tenancy

Select possible homes from the actual office, project and family journeys. Obtain current quotations for properties the household would accept, then record rent, lawful deposit, utilities, parking, insurance, internet and travel. A Toronto-wide rent average does not prove the cost or payment timing of the proposed tenancy. Keep temporary accommodation and overlap in the arrival ledger.

Read the proposed agreement against Ontario's current residential tenancy legislation and standard lease material. Record the landlord, premises, term, included services, payment dates and any separate rules supplied with the unit. Never import Toronto deposit language or assume that an application-stage payment has the same treatment as a final rent deposit.

Test the TTC and any connecting journey from the shortlisted address at the actual start and finish times. Add site travel, airport use, parking or a car only where the household will pay it. A housing allowance can still leave the employee funding the deposit and first payments before Canadian payroll begins.

Build education support from the named child's school case

Ask the employer for the education cap per child, covered ages, eligible schools, invoice requirements and payment route. Then use the current fee material for the named school, grade and entry date. Record tuition, application, enrolment, capital or building charges, transport, meals, uniform, devices, trips and learning support separately. Never apply another child's year-group amount.

Keep enquiry, assessment, waitlist, offer and accepted place as different stages. A published fee does not prove admission. Put every non-refundable payment and withdrawal condition beside its due date. Where the school requires an immigration or residence record, confirm the child's own route instead of relying on the employee's permit alone.

Map the school journey from each serious housing option using the actual timetable and payment method. Test collection responsibility and after-school commitments as well as the morning trip. Deduct employer support only from a charge the policy covers and only on the date the employer pays or reimburses it.

Keep health access and employer insurance as separate benefits

Obtain the employer plan name, covered family members, effective date, provider network, premiums, deductibles, co-payments, medicines and authorisation rules. An insurer's name or a benefits summary does not prove that a treatment, existing condition or family member is covered. Keep the written schedule and enrolment records for each beneficiary.

The federal post-approval material tells workers to arrange provincial or territorial health insurance or hold enough money for medical attention. Treat Ontario public-cover eligibility, access to a provider and private insurance as separate questions. Price only the premium and household-paid exposure that the current records support, plus a labelled reserve chosen by the household.

Check when employer cover begins and ends, particularly during probation, unpaid leave or termination. If family travel precedes activation, identify suitable interim cover before booking. Never give a medical benefit the value of its headline limit when exclusions, networks or employee payments leave a different household exposure.

Place every arrival payment on a dated cash schedule

Build a thirteen-week schedule from resignation through the first stable Canadian payroll. Enter travel, temporary accommodation, tenancy, school, communications, local transport and family costs on their due dates. Record direct employer bookings, employee payments and reimbursements as separate transactions. A positive annual package can still fail if the household funds several commitments before salary.

Allow for the permit, SIN, bank and payroll steps without assuming the shortest published processing time. The SIN status page gives different approximate periods for complete online and postal applications and later contact points. Use the route actually selected and keep a delay case. Never present an application reference as an issued SIN or usable payroll setup.

Remove bonus, pending expenses and unconfirmed benefits from the supported case. Add one stated disruption such as a later start, temporary family separation or delayed housing. Preserve the accepted case and downside case with their source dates. If either requires more cash than the household can access lawfully, resolve the gap before accepting.

Create an acceptance record and first-pay review

Prepare a one-page acceptance schedule showing salary, allowances, benefits, reimbursements, repayment conditions and every unresolved point. Link each line to the offer, contract, employer policy or official record and add the date checked. Mark stop points for employer identity, permit basis, dependable monthly cash, arrival funding, housing, school and health.

Keep the final offer and contract with the permit application material without treating them as interchangeable. Another authorised adult should be able to reproduce the household decision from the schedule and supporting records. Preserve the version used for acceptance. Later negotiations or actual costs belong in a dated revision, not a silent overwrite.

After the first salary credit, compare the employing entity, pay period, gross amount, allowances, CPP, EI, tax, expenses and bank receipt. Record and resolve differences through the employer. The offer calculator remains a scenario tool; it does not determine immigration eligibility, tax liability, written enforceability or whether a school, home or insurance plan is suitable.

Reconcile the accepted Toronto package after mobilisation

Compare the accepted package with the first payslip, first rent payment, first benefit statement and first reimbursed expense. Match each amount to the signed offer or policy. Resolve an unexplained difference through the responsible employer or provider and retain the response rather than silently changing the calculator.

Review the case at the end of probation and before any project reassignment. Recheck employer, duties, location, guaranteed pay, travel expectations, allowances, family benefits and repayment clauses. Where the change may affect the employer-specific permit, obtain current IRCC guidance before signing the variation.

Keep the offer model as the baseline and create a new dated case for every material change. Show the cash consequence before committing to another home, school payment or journey. A revised annual total does not answer whether the household can fund the next deposit or fee before payroll.
