Moving to Sydney for a professional role

Temporary skilled visas, sponsor duties, family timing, tax file number and first payroll.

Practical city guide

Sydney starting points

For Sydney, confirm the approved sponsor, occupation, visa subclass, nomination timing, family inclusion and who pays visa and health-cover costs. Prepare passport, qualifications, skills records, employment history, family records and health or police checks if requested. Australian offers should separate base salary, superannuation, bonus, health insurance support, relocation, flights and leave loading where relevant.

Sydney starting points

For Sydney, confirm the approved sponsor, occupation, visa subclass, nomination timing, family inclusion and who pays visa and health-cover costs. In the Sydney employment record, prepare passport, qualifications, skills records, employment history, family records and health or police checks if requested. Australian offers should separate base salary, superannuation, bonus, health insurance support, relocation, flights and leave loading where relevant.

Family timing should cover partner work rights, school entry, health-cover conditions and arrival date. The first month can include temporary accommodation, bond, rent, inspections, furniture, transport, mobile and school visits. Never travel on a role promise without the visa and approved sponsor position clear. The planner should track nomination, visa, arrival, TFN, bank, payroll, tenancy and family steps. Keep the sponsor, nominated position and family papers as separate records sets so a later payroll or housing query can be answered quickly.

Sydney household application

For a Sydney mobilisation, read this manage against the approved sponsor, nominated occupation and the visa grant held by the employee. The Home Affairs material checked for this page separates sponsorship, nomination, the worker's skills and the later route for a family member. Keep those records apart. Add the TFN application, PAYG setup and superannuation choice only when the employee is in the position required by the relevant process. The household folder should show the person responsible, the document used, the date checked and the event that would force a new review.

Confirm the sponsored Sydney position

The Skills in Demand visa is an employer-sponsored temporary route. Home Affairs states that an applicant must be nominated for a skilled position by an approved sponsor, have the skills required for the job and meet the relevant English-language requirement. Check the approved sponsor, employing entity, nominated occupation, stream and proposed Sydney duties against the signed employment contract before resignation or travel.

Home Affairs lists Core Skills, Specialist Skills and Labour Agreement streams. The Core Skills route requires an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List. The Specialist Skills route applies to specified major occupational groups and requires the nominated salary to meet its income threshold. A Labour Agreement application depends on the terms of the employer's agreement. Record the route used rather than describing every subclass 482 case as identical.

Temporary work visas may carry conditions limiting the work or employer. Read the grant and current status record for the individual employee. A client instruction, internal transfer or new project title cannot replace the sponsor, nomination and visa records. If the employing or work arrangement changes, obtain current immigration advice before treating the employee as authorised to continue.

Check salary against the nomination and contract

For nominations lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, Home Affairs publishes a Core Skills Income Threshold of AUD 79,423 and a Specialist Skills Income Threshold of AUD 146,576. It also states that the annual market salary rate and the overseas worker's pay, excluding non-monetary benefits, must meet the relevant threshold. Use the threshold for the actual stream and lodgement date; never apply it as a general salary recommendation.

Compare the nominated guaranteed earnings with the signed contract and payroll setup. Keep base salary, cash allowances, bonus, housing, school support, vehicle, private medical cover and relocation payments on separate lines. Confirm which benefits are included in guaranteed earnings for the immigration process and which sit outside it. Never assume that a high total package corrects a discrepancy in the nominated pay.

Ask whether the quoted remuneration is inclusive or exclusive of employer superannuation. The ATO publishes a 12 per cent super guarantee rate for the period from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Record the earnings basis and the fund contribution separately from cash salary. A superannuation contribution is not monthly household spending money.

Build the employee document and planning folder

Index the passport, nomination information, qualifications, employment history, skills records, English-language records where required, signed contract, application reference and final visa record. Record who supplied each item and who retains any original. Keep client onboarding and professional-membership checks separate because they cannot themselves grant immigration permission.

Check names, dates, occupation descriptions, employer details and salary figures across the nomination, visa application and contract. Raise an unexplained difference before travel. Preserve the written response and corrected record. Never alter a personal document or recast a claims, contracts or quantity-surveying role merely to make different records appear consistent.

Limit access to immigration and identity material. The employer may require documents for sponsorship, payroll or onboarding, but a project team does not need the employee's complete family or banking file. Keep a personal archive outside employer systems containing the lawful records needed after a change of project, employer or device.

Apply for and protect the Tax File Number

The ATO says a permanent migrant or temporary visitor in Australia with an eligible work-rights visa can apply online for a Tax File Number through Individual Auto Registration. The applicant must be in Australia and the visa must be linked to the passport or travel document. The listed eligible categories include a visa with work rights, a permanent-resident visa, an overseas-student visa or a visa permitting indefinite stay.

A TFN application is free. The ATO material states that an applicant who cannot use the online route may need the relevant paper form and that a completed application may take up to twenty-eight days. Check the current route for the employee's status. Never lodge repeated applications while a properly submitted application remains within the stated processing period.

Treat the TFN as protected identity information. Supply it only through the employer's approved payroll process or another lawful channel. Record the payroll declaration and first payslip check without placing the TFN itself in a general relocation tracker. If the employee already has a TFN, follow the ATO process for locating it rather than applying for another.

review PAYG withholding and superannuation

The ATO's 2026 PAYG withholding release states that fifteen withholding schedules and twelve tax tables apply from 1 July 2026. Payroll must use the table and employee declaration relevant to the payment. The household calculator should start from the employee's actual net pay or a dated payroll estimate, not from a generic percentage deducted from gross salary.

After the first salary, compare gross pay, ordinary hours, allowances, reimbursements, PAYG withholding, employee deductions, net credit and superannuation information with the accepted offer. Investigate a difference through payroll and preserve the response. Keep an approved expense claim outside available cash until the bank has received it.

From 1 July 2026, the ATO's Payday Super material says super guarantee is calculated at 12 per cent of qualifying earnings and paid on payday, with receipt by the fund within seven business days unless an extended timeframe applies. Check the employee's fund record against payroll at the appropriate date. Never add superannuation to monthly disposable income.

Manage mobilisation, family timing and change

Keep the employment start date, visa grant, entry plan, payroll cut-off, temporary accommodation and first project attendance on one sequence. A processing-time guide is not an individual decision date. Never book non-refundable travel or surrender an existing role merely because sponsorship or nomination activity has begun.

Where family members will accompany or follow the employee, record each person's application, visa and travel records separately. The subclass 482 material identifies a subsequent-entrant route, but the family's eligibility and grant still require the applicable process. Never describe the employee's grant as family approval.

Review the file when the sponsor, employing entity, nominated occupation, salary, normal work arrangement or family plan changes. Archive the earlier decision record. Obtain current Home Affairs information before accepting a transfer or new employer, and keep the household budget alive while any new immigration step remains unresolved.

Connect the sponsored role to construction work

Translate the nominated position into a dated duties schedule for the Sydney appointment. Identify the main office, expected client locations, project sites, reporting line and proportion of work attached to each activity. Compare that schedule with the nomination and contract. Where the employer cannot yet identify a project, record the uncertainty instead of inserting a presumed client or location.

A quantity surveying, commercial, contracts, claims or delay role may involve site inspections, expert-support work, confidential records and travel beyond the ordinary office. Confirm which activities belong to the employing entity and which arise from a client secondment. Keep the client mobilisation record separate from the visa decision, because approval by one does not prove approval by the other.

Check professional membership, qualification or project-access records through the organisation requesting it. Preserve the requirement and response. Never state that a professional credential grants work authorisation, and never send identity or immigration files to a project contact merely because that contact checks physical site access.

Maintain a monthly employment manage

Each month, compare the employing entity, role, salary, deductions, net bank credit and superannuation record with the controlling documents. Record approved unpaid expenses separately. A correct visa record does not prove payroll accuracy, and a correct payslip does not prove that the present duties remain within the sponsored arrangement.

Keep expiry and review dates in the employee's personal calendar, including passport, visa, professional records and any assignment or probation milestones. Name the employer contact for each item. Never rely on a project programme or human-resources reminder as the only record of a personal immigration deadline.

If employment ends or the project is curtailed, obtain written final-pay and immigration information for the actual case. Preserve the sponsor's response, visa record, payslips and travel records. Keep confidential project documents out of the personal archive while retaining the employment records needed for a lawful claim, application or professional review. Keep the visa grant, nomination, contract and mobilisation dates in one sequence so any mismatch is visible before travel.
