Banking in Qatar: documents and first salary arrangements
Requirements differ between banks and products.
Practical city guide
Prepare the account-opening file
QNB's current-account page states that an original passport and Qatari ID are required, and it describes a newcomer route in which the QID must be supplied within 90 days or the account is blocked. QIB's current-account page asks an expatriate for a valid QID, passport and employer salary certificate, and its digital onboarding scans those documents in the mobile application.

Requirements differ between banks and products.
Treat these as examples, not a universal rule. Ask the chosen bank for its current list, salary threshold, employer eligibility, address records, tax-residency declarations and any in-person identity step. Ensure the name matches the passport, QID and payroll instruction.
Bank example: QNB current account; Published core documents: Original passport and QID; Published account point: No monthly charge or minimum balance stated for this account.
Bank example: QIB current account; Published core documents: Valid QID, expatriate passport and salary certificate; Published account point: Current account linked to salary transfer.
Compare the operating costs
Look beyond a free debit card.
Check minimum balance, fall-below fee, local transfers, international transfer charge, exchange-rate margin, cash withdrawal access, cheque-book conditions, card replacement, standing orders and account closure. Read the tariff, not only the product page.
If the employer recommends a bank, ask whether this is required for payroll or simply convenient. Compare how you will send money home and hold more than one currency. A small transfer fee can be outweighed by a poor exchange rate.
Confirm the first salary date
Joining after payroll cut-off can extend the self-funded period.
Ask payroll for the cut-off, the account details needed, whether salary can be paid before QID or full account activation, and the treatment of any advance. Record whether relocation expenses are paid directly, reimbursed with payroll or recovered if employment ends during probation.
Keep enough money accessible outside the Qatar account until the debit card, mobile banking, transfers and salary credit have all worked. Never place the entire reserve into a tenancy payment before the immigration and banking sequence is stable.
Map the first large payments
The timing of rent and deposits can matter more than the monthly average.
List temporary accommodation, rent instalment, tenancy deposit, agency fee, Kahramaa deposit, internet, furniture, transport, school deposits, health costs and flights. Mark who pays, the currency, due date and whether the employer reimburses it.
For any cheque or post-dated payment arrangement, understand the account requirement and consequences before signing. Retain receipts and the written purpose of each payment. Verify account details through a second channel before sending a large transfer.
Protect access and identity
New arrivals are attractive targets for payment and identity fraud.
Use the bank's official application or typed website address. Never disclose a one-time password. Never install remote-access software for a caller. Confirm an altered invoice or bank account by calling a known contact number.
Keep the passport, QID, salary letter and statements in secure storage. Check transactions after salary, rent and international transfers. Report a lost card through the bank's official channel immediately.
Doha account opening and payment checks
Keep the account usable through arrival and departure.
Required actions: Read the current tariff. Confirm the payroll cut-off. Retain a reserve outside the new account. Verify large-payment instructions twice. Keep personal copies of bank records.
Avoid these errors: Never assume every current account has the same threshold. Never share a one-time password. Never fund all housing costs before payroll is clear. Never compare transfer fees without the exchange rate. Never close the account before refunds clear.
Check account eligibility against the issued Qatar records
Use the exact bank product page and customer category. QNB's current-account example asks for original passport and Qatar ID and describes a newcomer Qatar-ID deadline, while QIB's example asks for Qatar ID, expatriate passport and salary certificate. These examples show that documents and timing differ. They cannot guarantee opening or prove that every product has the same conditions. Ask the selected bank what it will accept at the employee's present residence stage and preserve the reply.
Separate application, account opening, card activation and full usefulness. An account number does not show that the debit card, transfer limits, beneficiary approvals or salary credit are ready. Record each stage and test it with a small lawful transaction. Compare name and identity details with the Qatar ID before payroll uses the account. If correction is needed, record the bank and employer case references so a returned or delayed salary can be traced.
Fund the period before the first salary credit
Build a dated list of accommodation, housing, food, transport, communications, school, health and document payments from arrival to the supported first-pay date. Keep card limits, overseas charges and exchange treatment visible. Money held abroad may be accessible but still unsuitable for a landlord or local service. Test material payment routes before their deadline and retain an alternative that does not depend on a new application or local number.
The runway calculator deducts known setup payments from accessible cash and divides the balance by recurring monthly spending. It deliberately excludes unused credit. Keep the result beside the due-date calendar because several large payments can exhaust cash despite a comfortable monthly ratio. Re-run it if payroll moves, temporary accommodation extends or family travel changes. Close a setup line only when the payment and any promised reimbursement have been reconciled.
Read fees, salary conditions and payment checks
Obtain the current tariff or facts statement for the exact account and card. Record minimum balance, salary-transfer condition, monthly fee, transfer charge, cash withdrawal, replacement card and international-use terms. Ask what changes if salary stops or residence status changes. Never select an account by a promotional headline or another employee's arrangement. Terms can differ by product and customer classification.
Set transaction alerts, secure recovery and appropriate limits after activation. Understand how a new beneficiary is approved and whether a cooling period applies. Make a small test before sending rent, school or another large amount. Keep the confirmation and recipient acknowledgement. Where a transfer has a payment purpose, the reference should identify the property, child or invoice rather than relying on a later explanation of an unlabelled payment.
Reconcile salary, expenses and employer support monthly
Keep the payslip, salary credit, expense approvals, reimbursement and deduction explanation for each month. Match the credit to the employment record rather than treating the bank description as sufficient. Raise differences through a traceable employer channel. If the bank applies a charge or return, retain its reason and case reference. The records should show the amount due, amount credited and any unresolved difference.
Maintain a separate receivables list for school, flight, temporary accommodation and project expenses. Record claim date, approver, required document and expected payroll. Never reduce household cost merely because a claim has been submitted. Close it only at the reconciled credit. This protects the relocation budget from an accumulating set of unpaid reimbursements that would otherwise disappear among ordinary account transactions.
Keep credit and finance outside available relocation cash
Treat card and finance limits as borrowing. Read the rate, fee, repayment, salary and early-settlement conditions before use. A displayed limit does not become income and may change when employment or residence status changes. Never fund rent, school or departure reserves with credit unless the household has tested the repayment and downside case. The runway result uses cash already accessible for that reason.
For vehicle or other finance, compare total repayment and exit cost with the likely project term. Record deposit, instalment, insurance and early settlement separately. An employer allowance may support monthly affordability while leaving the private debt entirely with the employee if the job ends. Preserve the agreement and repayment record outside employer systems, and never sign before the asset, supplier and payment instructions have been independently checked.
Plan account continuity and eventual closure
Ask the bank what must be reported when address, employer, salary, residence or telephone number changes. Keep recovery access independent of the employer email. Before departure, list direct debits, card subscriptions, rent instruments, loans, salary, refunds and reimbursements. Never close the account while a valid final credit or refund remains without another documented collection route. Never leave it unmanaged with charges continuing after the local number ends.
Move or cancel services through their own written route, settle confirmed liabilities, download statements and obtain closure confirmation. A cancelled card does not necessarily cancel the supplier contract. Preserve statements covering mobilisation through departure and keep the bank's confirmation in the final archive. If an unresolved payment remains after travel, state who will follow it, what access is retained and the deadline for the next action.
Coordinate payroll instructions with account activation
Ask payroll which account details and records it requires and the last date for the current pay run. Submit through the employer's authorised channel and retain acknowledgement. Confirm the account name and number character by character. Never send banking details to an unverified message contact or assume that a card envelope proves payroll has accepted the account.
After the first credit, compare value date, amount and description with the payslip. If the salary is returned or delayed, obtain the bank's reason and the employer case reference. Keep temporary funds available until the ordinary salary route has worked. The cash runway closes only after the credited income can be used for the household's real payment methods.
Protect joint household access without sharing credentials
Decide how each adult pays household obligations and accesses emergency cash. Use bank-supported mandates, supplementary cards or separate accounts where suitable; never share passwords or approval codes. Record who pays rent, school, utilities and insurance and who can act when the salary earner is at site or travelling.
Keep the bank's official loss and fraud contact route offline. Test card blocking, replacement and account recovery information before an emergency. Review transaction alerts and beneficiary lists monthly. Remove obsolete recipients and old devices through the proper checks, while retaining payment records needed for tenancy, school and reimbursement records.
Maintain a household payment document checklist
Index material transfers by date, recipient, purpose, amount, bank reference and receiving acknowledgement. Link rent to the tenancy, school payments to the child and invoice, and reimbursable project spending to the approved claim. A statement proves movement of money but may not explain the obligation it discharged.
Review the index with the monthly statement and close duplicate, returned or unexplained entries. Keep disputed card payments and fraud reports in a separate case record. This gives the household a usable records trail without distributing full bank statements to every landlord, school or employer contact.
