Leaving Australia
Final pay, superannuation records, tenancy, tax, banking and school transfer records.
Practical city guide
Sydney starting points
Australia departure planning should cover notice, final pay, leave, bonus, expenses, superannuation records and tax documents. Check visa expiry, employer notification, school dates and family travel before booking flights. For housing, give notice, complete the condition process, close utilities and keep bond-return records.

Check visa expiry, employer notification, school dates and family travel before booking flights. For housing, give notice, complete the condition process, close utilities and keep bond-return records.
Build the Sydney departure sequence around the payments that can arrive after the household leaves. Keep the Australian account available for final salary, rental bond, tax, school refunds and unsettled card items. Download school, medical, insurance, payroll and superannuation records before closing local access methods. Assign an owner and records date to each remaining utility, telecoms, lease, toll or vehicle liability.
Sydney document checklist
Employment; Final pay, leave, superannuation and tax documents.
Home; Notice, condition process, utilities and bond.

The checklist should combine employer, landlord, bank, insurer, school and tax dates.
Sydney household application
Work backwards from the actual last working day, tenancy requirement, school date and travel booking. Check the visa and approved-sponsor position through current Home Affairs information instead of assuming that resignation, dismissal or travel changes status automatically. Use the NSW agreement and current official route for notice, condition and bond. Put final salary, superannuation records, rent, utilities, school adjustments, shipment and destination setup on dated lines. Keep the Australian account only where its terms and expected credits justify it, then close each exception against written records.
Set the departure sequence from issued records
Start with the last working day, notice, visa conditions, visa expiry, family records, tenancy requirements, school dates and intended travel. Keep their sources separate. Resignation, dismissal, project completion and physical departure will not automatically produce the same immigration date.
Check the current Home Affairs position for the sponsored worker and every family member before changing employer, continuing work or fixing travel. Preserve the sponsor response and issued visa information. Never infer a grace period or new work right from a colleague's experience.
List decisions that must occur before notice, before the last day, before travel and after arrival at the destination. Assign an owner and records requirement. Keep non-refundable travel outside the committed case until the controlling dates are clear.
Reconcile employment and project close-out
Request a written final-pay statement covering salary, allowances, approved expenses, leave, bonus or retention amounts, deductions and any relocation recovery. Compare it with the contract and prior payroll. Record expected and received dates separately and keep a disputed amount outside available departure cash.
Preserve payslips, PAYG and superannuation records through the employee's lawful personal archive. The ATO's current materials distinguish withholding and superannuation from net salary. Never add a super balance to ordinary departure cash or treat withholding as final tax advice.
Return devices, passes, documents and project property through the employer's process and obtain suitable records. Remove personal material where permitted without deleting corporate records. Keep confidential client and project files out of the household departure archive.
End the NSW tenancy through the agreement
Read the signed agreement and current NSW notice route for the actual reason and end date before serving notice. A visa or assignment date does not itself end the tenancy. Preserve the notice, service records, landlord or agent acknowledgement and any agreed variation.
Use the incoming condition report and photographs to prepare the premises. Record final condition, cleaning, repairs, meter readings, utilities, keys, access devices and forwarding details. Keep a disputed repair or damage item separate from ordinary rent.
Treat the rental bond as a later possible receipt. Reconcile the returned amount with the original Rental Bonds Online record and any written claim. Never fund flights or destination housing from an expected bond before it reaches the account.
Apply each school's withdrawal terms
Read the accepted school's current notice and refund terms before fixing the last attendance date. Sydney Grammar's cited 2026 page requires one full term's written notice and describes an additional charge equal to one quarter of annual tuition where adequate notice is not given. Never apply that term to another school.
Request a final school statement covering tuition, additional charges, transport, meals, devices and any refund. Match employer education reimbursement separately. A school credit is not departure cash until confirmed and received.
Collect reports, course and examination records, transfer information and agreed support documents through the school process. Confirm the destination school's needs before requesting unnecessary personal material. Close school access and payment mandates after the final account agrees.
Maintain health continuity after Australia
Identify unfinished Medicare or insurer claims, future appointments, medicine needs and clinical-record requests. Check the final day of employer insurance and the applicable Medicare position against the person's visa and residence circumstances. Never cancel cover simply because travel is booked.
For the United Kingdom reciprocal route, Services Australia states that cover starts on arrival and ends when the visa expires for the route described. Apply the current rule to the individual's record and obtain advice where circumstances differ. Keep destination cover operational before the handover.
Settle provider balances and give every open claim a reference and next date. Transfer clinical information with patient consent through suitable channels. Keep diagnoses and detailed records outside employer and general relocation files.
Keep banking open only for identified credits
List final salary, expenses, bond, school credits, health claims and utility adjustments expected after travel. Ask the bank about the new address, access and account closure through its secure route. Keep the account only where its terms and outstanding payments justify it.
Before changing the Australian mobile number, download statements, test recovery and remove obsolete payees and mandates. Transfer a small amount to the destination account and reconcile the received value before moving the balance. Record exchange rate and charges.
Close cards and the account after all expected items are settled, then retain the confirmation and minimum supporting statements. Keep an exception register for any missing amount rather than describing the banking file as complete.
Build the departure cash model from confirmed amounts
Enter received final salary and expenses, received bond or rent balance and received school credit as separate inflows. Enter housing overlap, travel, shipping, temporary accommodation and other paid close-out costs separately. Leave an unresolved receipt outside the base case.
Run a base case and a downside case excluding disputed or delayed amounts. Keep currencies separate until a real conversion or dated quotation is used. The calculator is a cash comparison, not a tax calculation, final entitlement or prediction that a refund will be paid.
Match every line to a bank credit, receipt, statement or written decision. Preserve the calculation and sources used for the departure decision. Update it after travel only when records changes the amount.
Close post-departure exceptions one by one
Keep a post-departure list for employment, visa, tenancy, school, health, utilities and banking. Give each item its reference, responsible organisation, expected action and review date. Never close it because the family has left Sydney.
Retain the lawful access needed to resolve each item without keeping every Australian account open. Remove employer, project and relocation access that has ended. Preserve confidential project obligations while maintaining personal employment and payment records.
Close an exception only when the written response and received or paid amount agree with the original ledger. Archive the final record securely and remove duplicate identity, health and banking documents no longer required.
Issue a final Sydney departure plan
Prepare one dated statement listing the final work and visa position, tenancy status, school account, health cover, bank access, travel and every open receipt or payment. Link each entry to its controlling record. Never describe the departure as complete while a material item has only been requested.
Give payroll, the landlord or agent, school, insurer and bank the contact and address information each legitimately needs. Keep client and project contacts outside personal forwarding unless there is a continuing authorised purpose. Remove former relocation users after their final handover.
Reconcile shipment, storage, flights, temporary accommodation and destination setup against invoices and bank debits. Keep insurance and claim records for damaged or delayed property. A quotation is not a paid departure cost and should be replaced only when the actual invoice is received.
Review the exceptions register after the first destination bank cycle. Match final salary, bond, school and health credits to the original Australian amounts before conversion where possible. Record any exchange difference and fee rather than altering the expected source amount.
When every item has a written result and the associated money agrees, archive the final statement and minimum records. Close obsolete Australian access and delete unnecessary copies of identity and health records. Preserve personal employment records without retaining confidential construction project material.
Protect the destination arrival from Sydney delays
Hold destination accommodation and essential spending outside expected Sydney refunds. A bond, school credit or final expense reimbursement can arrive after travel or be disputed. The downside case should fund arrival without those receipts and show the review date for each outstanding Australian amount.
Keep a secure copy of the final tenancy, payroll and bank contacts that can be reached from the destination. Test account and email access before the Australian mobile service ends. Remove obsolete payment access only after the receiving account and post-departure communication route work.
Sydney final check
Check the current visa conditions and employer relationship before fixing a new employment or travel plan. Obtain current Home Affairs information for the actual change. Keep visa, approved sponsor and travel records together, while returning employer property and protecting confidential project information.
Close the NSW tenancy through the real agreement and notice route. Reconcile rent, bond, keys, condition report, utilities and any supported claim. Retain the Australian account only where its terms permit the later address and expected payroll, tax, school or service credits justify it.
After leaving Sydney, keep an exceptions list for final salary, tax records, superannuation, school credits, health claims, utility balances and account transfers. Give each item a reference and next action date. Close it only when written records and the received amount agree with the original ledger.
Keep the departure decision anchored to the actual Sydney dates and issued records. Recheck any item whose provider, amount or status changes after notice. A final spreadsheet line is closed only when the written response and received or paid amount agree.
