Banking in the United Kingdom
Proof of identity, address records, salary credit, international transfers and fraud checks.
Practical city guide
London starting points
UK banks normally need identity, address and tax-residency records. Some digital banks may open earlier, but payroll may prefer a mainstream account.
London starting points
UK banks normally need identity, address and tax-residency records. Some digital banks may open earlier, but payroll may prefer a mainstream account.
Ask payroll what account records are needed and whether first salary can be paid if the account is still being opened.
Compare international transfer margin, account charges, card fees, overdraft rules and fraud checks before moving the reserve.
Large payments include deposit, first rent, school fees, temporary accommodation, furniture and travelcards.
Payment fraud is common around rent and conveyancing-style transfers. Verify changed bank details by a known phone number.
Never close the overseas account until salary, UK card, rent payments and emergency access all work.
The runway tool should show the weeks between arrival, bank opening and first salary.
London document checklist
Identity; Passport, visa records, address and tax-residency declarations.
Payroll; Account records, salary date and fallback payment route.
Transfers; Exchange margin, daily limits and fees.
Security; Known-number verification for changed payment details.
Build the account-opening document pack
Start with the chosen bank's current eligibility and document checklist. HSBC publishes a route for people who are new to the UK, but the applicant must still satisfy the product conditions and checks. Record the exact product, application channel, records requested and outcome for each adult.
Prepare passport, immigration status records, UK address records where requested, employment details, tax information and contact details. Keep names and dates consistent across documents. Never alter an address format merely to make two documents appear identical; explain a genuine difference through the bank's approved route.
Retain application references and requests for further records. A submitted form is not an opened account, and an account number alone does not confirm that cards, online access, transfers and salary credits work. Keep temporary payment arrangements until the account has been tested.
Sequence salary, rent and household payments
Put the first payroll date, account activation, tenancy payment and deposit deadline on one calendar. Confirm whether payroll can use a temporary account and when changes close for each pay run. Never promise a landlord a transfer date that depends on an untested account or pending salary.
Separate reservation or holding money, tenancy deposit, first rent and any lawful fee in the payment record. The government deposit guidance sets limits and protection duties, but it does not authenticate a payee. Match the tenancy, agent or landlord and payment instruction before sending funds.
Keep an arrival reserve outside the new account until access is stable. Price accommodation, food, local travel, communications and urgent replacement purchases for the actual gap. The reserve is a household assumption, not a standard amount for every London assignment.
Test the account before relying on it
Once opened, test login, password recovery, a small incoming transfer, a small outgoing transfer, card payment and cash access. Check the displayed account holder name and payment references. Resolve an unexpected block before moving the main household balance.
Set transaction and security alerts on devices the account holder checks. Record the bank's official lost-card and fraud contacts independently of messages. Never disclose a one-time code or approve a payment merely because a caller knows personal or employment details.
Confirm whether a joint account, additional card or power arrangement is actually needed. Give each adult appropriate independent access rather than sharing credentials. Record who can pay rent, school or medical costs if the employee is travelling or working at a project site.
Manage foreign exchange and transfer records
For each transfer, capture source currency, sterling received, exchange rate, transfer charge, correspondent deduction and date. Compare providers using the amount delivered, not an advertised rate alone. A cheaper headline can produce a lower receipt after fees or timing changes.
Use only regulated routes accepted by the bank and preserve source-of-funds records. Ask the bank what it needs before moving a deposit-sized amount. Never fragment transactions to avoid a check; explain the genuine source and purpose with supporting records.
The calculator can compare entered rates and charges but cannot predict a future exchange rate. Record the quote time and expiry. For a committed payment, test the result against the invoice amount and leave a clear margin for an identified deduction rather than inventing a universal percentage.
Create a verified payment directory
Create approved payee records for the landlord, school, insurer and regular household suppliers only after independent verification. Store the source of the details and the person who checked them. A copied email chain is not independent records of a changed bank account.
When a beneficiary changes, stop and verify through a telephone number or portal obtained separately. Check account name, reference, invoice and due date. Make a small test payment if the recipient supports that route and confirm receipt before the balance.
Remove obsolete payees and standing orders after reconciliation, not simply after moving home or changing school. Retain lawful records needed for deposit, fee or refund disputes. Never leave open mandates attached to an address or service no longer used.
Track credit, overdraft and recurring commitments
Treat any overdraft or credit as a separate agreement with its own eligibility, rate, fees and repayment terms. Never include an unapproved limit in accessible cash. Read the current product information supplied to the applicant and record the decision date.
List direct debits, standing orders, card subscriptions and annual renewals. Add the payment date, amount basis, cancellation route and responsible adult. Review after the first two statements because setup duplication and forgotten subscriptions can distort the relocation budget.
Keep business expenses and household costs distinguishable even where one account is temporarily used. Save receipts and employer submissions. A reimbursable item remains a cash outflow until the employer credit is received and matched.
Reconcile statements and protect records
Reconcile the first statement line by line against rent, deposit, school, travel and setup records. Investigate duplicate, reversed or unfamiliar items through the bank's official route. Keep the date, reference and response for an unresolved transaction.
Store statements and payment records in an secure household folder. Avoid sending full statements through ordinary project email when a smaller itemised record is sufficient. Redact only copies, never the saved note needed for a bank or formal process.
Review device access, recovery details and alerts after changing mobile number or address. Test that both the account holder and an authorised household adult know the emergency route. Security checks that cannot be reached during travel are not useful checks.
Close the London banking cycle cleanly
Before departure, list salary, deposit refund, tax, utility, insurance and school credits still expected. Keep a working sterling account only where the bank permits the future address and the household has a reason. Confirm address and tax-residence updates through the bank.
Cancel mandates only after the final charge and refund position is known. Download statements and confirmations while normal access remains. Transfer the residual balance through an recorded route and verify receipt before closing the source account.
Record closure, retained accounts and unresolved credits in the departure file. The banking calculator is a cash-planning aid. It does not determine product eligibility, tax treatment, regulatory status or the safety of a payment instruction.
Account and payment final check
Record the selected account, current eligibility, application channel, requested records, reference and outcome for each applicant. HSBC publishes a new-to-UK route, but the bank must still complete its checks and product decision. Never call an application an account, or an account operational, until login, card, incoming credit and outgoing payment have been tested through official channels.
Put the first salary, tenancy payment, school invoice and temporary accommodation end date on one cash calendar. Record any employer advance or reimbursement separately. A future salary or refund cannot meet a payment due earlier. Maintain a clear arrival reserve using the household's recorded commitments rather than a generic sterling amount copied from another expatriate case.
Verify every landlord, school, insurer and service payee independently of the message that requested payment. Match account name, invoice, reference and purpose. Stop on an unexpected beneficiary change and contact the organisation through a previously verified route. A familiar email chain can be compromised, and a bank accepting an instruction does not establish that the recipient was legitimate.
For foreign exchange, capture source amount, rate, provider charge, correspondent deduction, sterling delivered, quote time and receipt date. Compare the delivered result, not the advertised rate. Preserve lawful source-of-funds records and ask the bank about required records before a large move. Never fragment payments or misstate their purpose to avoid a check.
List direct debits, standing orders, cards, subscriptions, credit and overdraft commitments with terms and review dates. Never include an unapproved facility as available cash. Keep employer expenses distinguishable from household spending and match reimbursements when received. Reconcile the first two statements line by line so duplicate setup payments and forgotten mandates are found early.
Protect statements, recovery routes and transaction alerts. Give another authorised household adult suitable access without sharing credentials. Test security after a telephone or address change. Use official fraud contacts obtained independently, never a number or link in an unexpected message. Record unresolved transactions with dates and references until the bank's process reaches an outcome.
At departure, retain access only where product terms allow the new address and outstanding credits require it. Update tax and contact details through the bank, settle mandates, download records and verify the destination transfer before closure. The calculator models entered cash and transfer cases. It does not decide product eligibility, tax residence, regulatory compliance or whether a payment is safe.
Resolve the first-quarter banking exceptions
At the end of each of the first three months, compare expected and received salary, employer credits, rent, school and recurring household payments. Mark every difference with an owner and date. An unexplained credit should not be spent merely because it increased the displayed balance, and a reversed debit should remain open until the supplier and bank positions agree.
Review transfer limits and notice requirements before a deposit, school invoice or departure payment becomes urgent. Keep authentication devices and recovery contacts usable during site travel. Where the bank requests updated records, use its official channel and preserve the request. Never send identity documents in response to an unexpected link, even when the message refers to a real pending transaction.
Document any cash, card or transfer workaround used during arrival and remove it when the normal account operates. Shared informal wallets and personal loans can obscure who paid a tenancy or school amount. Reimburse and record them openly, with the original receipt and final settlement, so the household and employer ledgers avoid counting the same payment twice.
Review fees and service suitability against actual use, not the assumptions made before arrival. If another product is considered, compare current terms and switching consequences through the provider. Retain the old records and reconcile outstanding card transactions before closure. An account change is an administrative decision; the calculator does not recommend a regulated financial product.
