Choosing a school in Riyadh

British, IB and international options, admissions records, fees and family timing.

Practical city guide

Shortlist

Riyadh has British and international schools with different calendars, admission ages and year-group structures. Confirm whether the school accepts the child's current year placement before paying fees.

Shortlist

Start with age, curriculum, location, calendar, admissions timing, sibling priority, learning support, exams and the commute.

Riyadh has British and international schools with different calendars, admission ages and year-group structures. Confirm whether the school accepts the child's current year placement before paying fees.

Named schools

Use the fee table as a planning screen. Confirm application fee, assessment, registration, capital levy, bus charge, uniform, technology and exam costs with the school.

The named schools in this guide are planning examples. Families should also test location against the office or site, because cross-city school runs can dominate mornings.

Admissions records

Prepare passports, residence records where required, prior school reports, vaccination record, learning support records and transfer certificates if requested.

Saudi schools may request attested records, transfer letters, vaccination records and passport or Iqama documents. Ask the admissions team which documents can follow after arrival.

Daily travel

A school that works on paper can break the household timetable. Test drop-off, collection, activities and the parent's office or site route together.

For younger children, include nursery or early-years availability. For older children, examine GCSE, A level, IB or US pathway fit before taking a place for convenience.

Employer support

Check whether the employer pays the school, reimburses you, caps the allowance, excludes extras or applies a waiting period.

Employer education support often excludes application fees, registration, transport, uniforms, meals, trips, examination entries and capital charges. Confirm each line before accepting.

Riyadh working checks

Do join waitlists early and keep fee schedules. Never assume admission because a relocation package mentions schooling.

Never assume a place exists because the employer mentions school support. Admissions timing, assessment and waiting lists can manage the family move.

School-cost tool

The calculator annualises tuition and adds application, registration, transport and extras.

The school-cost tool should be completed per child. Two children in different age bands can produce a very different annual cash requirement.

Riyadh document checklist

British International School Riyadh; British curriculum; check year placement, assessment and transport.

King's College Riyadh; British curriculum; check admissions timing and one-off charges.

Reigate Grammar School Riyadh; British curriculum; check VAT, book deposits and examination extras.

Household timing; School route must be tested with the parent's office or site route.

Set the child profile before contacting Riyadh schools

Prepare one dated profile for each child. Record date of birth, present year group, curriculum, subjects, languages, recent reports, learning support, examination pathway and intended start term. Send the same factual profile to every admissions team so their responses can be compared. Never assume that schools using a British label place children identically or offer the same subjects at secondary level.

Ask each school to confirm the proposed year group, campus, curriculum and admissions stage in writing. Record whether the response is an enquiry acknowledgement, an invitation to assess, a waiting-list position, a conditional offer or a confirmed place. These stages have different value. A fee quotation or application receipt is not records that the child can start on the household's intended date.

Compare the named schools on the same fee year

Use fee schedules for the same academic year and the child's actual year group. King's College Riyadh publishes 2026-2027 figures by year group and identifies VAT-inclusive expatriate amounts. The BISR and Reigate figures in this guide come from the dated saved note. Recheck each school page before applying or paying because year-group tables, VAT presentation and charges can change.

Create separate lines for tuition, application, assessment, enrolment, deposit, transport, uniform, device, meals, trips, examinations and learning support. Mark whether each amount is refundable and when it falls due. Never average two year groups or describe a lower-years figure as the household's expected fee. Keep the school invoice or published schedule beside every amount entered in the calculator.

Map admissions cash against employer education support

Read the employer policy beside the school's payment schedule. Record the annual cap per child, eligible ages, qualifying schools, included charges, required invoice name and reimbursement timing. A benefit may cover tuition while excluding enrolment, transport and uniforms. It may be paid to the school or refunded after the employee has settled the invoice. Those routes create different cash requirements.

Build a calendar from application through the final term. Show what the household pays, when the employer claim can be filed and when repayment is expected. Keep uncertain support out of the confirmed column. If the package uses an annual cap, test whether it follows the calendar year, academic year or employment anniversary. Obtain written clarification before accepting a non-refundable place.

Test the school run with the actual Riyadh work pattern

Plot the precise campus, likely home, office and construction site. Test arrival and collection times on working days, including the parent's earliest site attendance and any afternoon activity. A short map distance can become a long household commitment when school and project traffic coincide. Ask whether bus transport serves the exact district and whether a responsible adult must meet younger children.

Price the school run separately from the employee commute. Record school bus, second vehicle, driver, taxi and parking cases. Public transport can support some journeys but should not be assumed to solve the child's final connection. Where the employer may reassign the employee, record how a different project location would affect the selected home and school before signing a long tenancy.

Prepare the admissions and safeguarding file

Ask the chosen school for its current checklist. Prepare passports, photographs, birth records, residence records where required, reports, transfer documents, vaccination records and any assessment or support material. Check the exact spelling and date of birth used throughout. Keep originals clear and record any certified, translated or authenticated copy the school actually requests rather than applying a generic document rule.

For learning support, medical needs or examination access, disclose the information needed for a safe and informed placement and ask what the school can provide. Preserve the response and agreed arrangements. Never treat a general admissions acceptance as confirmation of specialist support. Record emergency contacts, collection permissions, transport contacts and medication procedures before the first attendance day.

Protect the decision if the move date changes

Ask what happens to application, enrolment, deposit and tuition payments if residence processing, project mobilisation or family travel is delayed. Record notice dates, refund conditions and any deferral route from the school's current terms. Never rely on an informal assurance where the family may commit a large amount. Keep the offer expiry and first attendance deadline visible in the relocation plan.

Maintain a second workable option until the chosen place, travel date and housing route are stable. The alternative should have a known curriculum fit, admissions status, fee year and journey. Never join numerous waiting lists without tracking charges and withdrawal duties. Close unwanted applications clearly and retain confirmations so future invoices or seat claims can be reconciled.

Complete a first-term reconciliation

After the child starts, reconcile the accepted fee schedule, invoices, bank payments and employer reimbursement. Check transport, meals, activities and one-off items that were absent from the initial tuition table. Replace the planning figures with actual amounts while keeping the original case for comparison. A school budget is clear only when every payment and refund has a record trail.

Review the school, home and work triangle after several ordinary weeks. Record journey time, missed site or office time, transport reliability and the child's experience. Never move school or home from one difficult day, but never ignore a repeated timetable failure. Put the next fee, notice and employer-claim dates in one calendar before the following term becomes binding.

Check curriculum continuity subject by subject

For secondary pupils, compare subjects, specifications, examination boards and teaching sequence rather than the curriculum name alone. Ask which options are available at the campus and whether the pupil can enter mid-course. Preserve the written response. Never assume that prior grades transfer directly or that every advertised subject runs each year.

For younger pupils, compare entry age, language approach, class structure and transition support. Record the intended destination after Riyadh and ask how reports and transfer records will support it. A school can be suitable academically but incompatible with the family's likely move date, so place the curriculum decision beside the assignment timetable.

review fees before each payment window

Before paying, compare the invoice with the current published schedule, accepted year group and written offer. Check VAT presentation, term allocation, previous credit and each extra. Query a difference before the deadline and retain the answer. Never rely on the calculator figure as organisation for the school's actual invoice.

After payment, store the receipt and update employer reimbursement records. Track deposits and refundable balances separately from tuition. If a child withdraws, apply the school's current notice and refund terms to the exact date. A future credit should remain outstanding until the school confirms it and the money is received or applied.

Plan transport and after-school care for both parents' work

Record morning opening, collection, activity and holiday times against both parents' work and travel. Ask who may collect the child and what happens after a late arrival. Price school transport and an alternative emergency route. Never assume that an employer driver, project vehicle or ordinary taxi can lawfully and practically carry out the school routine.

Review the plan during site deadlines, Ramadan timetable changes where notified, school holidays and business travel. Keep approved local contacts and written collection permissions current. The household should know who acts when the normal driver is unavailable, without sharing identity or child information more widely than the school requires.

Prepare for transfer out of the Riyadh school

At enrolment, record withdrawal notice, report issue, transfer document and deposit rules. Before leaving, ask the destination school what it needs and request the Riyadh records early. Reconcile employer-funded and personal payments. Never assume the final report or transfer certificate is automatic once the child stops attending.

Keep copies of reports, examination entries, support plans and payment clearance that the family may lawfully retain. Confirm the last attendance date and transport cancellation. Close the admissions and fee file only when school withdrawal, records transfer, employer reconciliation and any refund have separate records.

Record what the calculator does not decide

The comparison calculates two annual cash cases after entered support. It does not assess admissions probability, curriculum quality, safeguarding, learning support, travel or contract terms. Keep those decisions in the child profile and admissions record. A lower result cannot make an unavailable or unsuitable place workable.

Use current named fees only for the matching school, year group and academic year. Label all extras and employer support by records or assumption. Re-run the case when the school issues an invoice or the employer confirms payment. Preserve blanks where an amount is unknown instead of borrowing an amount from another school or child.
