Checking a Qatar job offer before you travel
The project brand may not be the company that sponsors or pays you.
Practical city guide
Identify the named employing company and assignment
Match the company name, commercial identity and contact details across the offer, contract and visa process. Ask whether you are employed by the contractor, consultant, client, joint venture, labour supplier or another group company. Confirm the office, current project, reporting line and whether employment continues if that project finishes.

Obtain the full job description. Claims, contracts and commercial appointments can involve site records, dispute work, client meetings and travel outside Doha. Ask whether the role is office based, site based or mixed, and whether the employer can transfer you between locations.
Question: Who employs me?; Why it matters: checks sponsorship, payroll and employment rights; records to request: Exact registered name on offer and contract.
Question: Where will I work?; Why it matters: Changes housing and transport cost; records to request: Office and current project locations.
Question: Is the role project-specific?; Why it matters: Affects continuity after completion; records to request: Written assignment and redeployment terms.
Question: Who pays me?; Why it matters: Avoids confusion within a group; records to request: Payroll entity and bank transfer date.
Rebuild the package line by line
Put recurring pay, annual benefits and household costs into one annual comparison.
Record basic salary and every allowance separately. Identify whether housing or transport is cash, reimbursement or a company-provided item. Ask when each allowance starts and whether it continues during leave, probation or notice. Never assign a cash value to a promised benefit until the eligibility and limit are written.
Model the expected annual household cost using the property type and area you would actually choose. Add school fees, insurance for dependants, utilities, transport, annual travel and initial setup. A family package should be tested after school and housing costs, because those two items can consume much of the salary difference.
Check working time and site travel
The weekly routine determines transport, childcare and family time.
Ask for normal working days and hours, the weekly rest day, site start times and the expected treatment of additional hours. Record whether project deadlines, testing, handover or claims submissions require evening or weekend attendance. If the role involves remote or changing sites, ask who supplies the vehicle and how travel time, fuel and parking are treated.
Test the proposed routine against school drop-off, nursery hours and the spouse's work. A housing area that works for West Bay may be unsuitable for an industrial or outlying project. No salary comparison is complete without the ordinary door-to-door week.
Ask for the benefit documents
A label such as 'family medical' or 'schooling provided' is not enough.
For medical cover, request the insurer, network, benefit schedule, co-payment, annual limit, maternity position, dependants covered and activation date. For education, record the amount per child, eligible ages, approved schools, reimbursement records and whether registration, capital or transport charges count.
For flights, record destination, class, eligibility date, cash alternative and dependent entitlement. For accommodation, inspect the actual unit or obtain a written specification and location. For bonuses, identify whether the payment is guaranteed, discretionary or based on a formula.
Checklist: Insurer and provider network obtained; Dependent cover confirmed; School allowance limit and exclusions written; Flight eligibility and destination written; Housing location or allowance confirmed; Vehicle, fuel and parking treatment confirmed; Bonus basis identified; First payroll date confirmed.
Red flags before travel
Resolve contradictions while you still have bargaining power.
Pause if the recruiter will not identify the sponsor, requests visa money through a personal account, supplies an unsigned or incomplete offer, changes salary components without explanation or refuses to provide policy details for major benefits. Keep records of every agreed correction.
Never resign solely on an informal message. Ask how the offer depends on medical, background, attestation or client approval, and what happens to travel or relocation costs if the appointment does not proceed.
Doha offer points to resolve before acceptance
Make the decision from records rather than the headline figure.
Required actions: Annualise every salary and benefit item. Price housing and schools before accepting. Confirm the first salary date. Ask for policy schedules and fee limits. Record the agreed work location.
Avoid these errors: Never value discretionary benefits as guaranteed cash. Never ignore basic salary within the total. Never assume dependants are included in medical cover. Never accept a project brand as the employer name. Never fund recruitment through a personal account.
Separate basic wage, allowances and supplied benefits
Rewrite the offer into a schedule with one line for basic wage, each cash allowance, each reimbursed item and each benefit supplied directly. Record payment frequency, currency, start condition and whether the amount changes with project assignment, attendance or family status. Never merge basic wage and allowances into one headline because later calculations and employment rights may refer to the basic component. Where a benefit is discretionary or subject to a policy, obtain that policy before giving it a monthly value.
Test what the household must still buy. Employer accommodation may remove rent but leave utilities, furnishing or family housing outside the arrangement. A vehicle may cover project travel but not personal use. Employee health cover may exclude dependants. Education support may be capped, restricted to tuition or paid after receipt. The calculator includes only cash and confirmed monthly support, then deducts costs left to the employee. One-off joining payments and refundable deposits belong in a separate cash calendar.
Price the period before ordinary salary begins
Ask when the employee enters payroll, the cut-off date and the earliest supported first-credit date. List flights, temporary accommodation, meals, transport, document costs, banking access, mobile service and any payment required before salary. If a joining advance is offered, record when it is paid and whether it can later be deducted. Never treat an approved reimbursement as cash already available. The household must fund the payment until the employer has accepted the records and issued the credit.
Keep enough accessible money outside a card or account that may be restricted during travel. Check the lawful payment routes for accommodation and later housing. If the family remains in another country, add both households' costs and repeat travel for the expected split period. A relocation allowance can appear generous when stated annually but fail the dates on which tenancy, school and family travel payments fall. Use a thirteen-week cash calendar alongside the offer comparison to expose that gap.
Test housing and school support against the actual family case
For housing, confirm whether the employer supplies a unit, pays a landlord, gives a fixed allowance or reimburses rent. Record eligible property, family status, cap, payment timing, deposit treatment, utilities and what occurs when the project or employment ends. Never value company housing at an assumed market rent if the employee cannot choose or retain it. The useful value is the household cost genuinely removed and the exposure created by losing the accommodation with the job.
For education support, compare the benefit with the exact licensed school and year-group fee schedule. Include compulsory charges and transport where the employer policy permits them. Record the annual cap per child, ages covered, approval route and reimbursement date. The named Doha school fees in the records register show how far valid examples can differ; they cannot establish one market average. Leave school support at zero in the calculator until the selected child's eligibility is confirmed in writing.
Read probation, notice and repayment together
Identify probation wording, notice obligations and the date on which each starts. Then list every amount the offer says may be recovered: recruitment, travel, accommodation, training, equipment or joining payments. Never assume that a stated deduction is automatically correct or incorrect. Record the clause, amount and event said to trigger it, and seek suitable advice where needed. The budgeting task is to recognise the cash exposure before rent, school or vehicle commitments are signed.
Run a downside case in which uncertain bonus, overtime, project allowance and family support are removed. Include the household's notice-driven payments, return travel and time before the next income. Compare that case with the proposed tenancy and school terms. A package that works only while every variable payment continues has little room for a project delay or early end. The offer record should show which commitments can be delayed until probation and payroll have been tested.
Check the project assignment behind the job title
Ask whether the position is tied to one project, a consulting office or a wider regional function. Record initial workplace, likely sites, work pattern, project duration and travel outside Doha or Qatar. Establish how site transport, accommodation, meals and business expenses are handled. A commercial manager or claims consultant may carry the same title across offers while facing very different working time, travel and household costs. The offer schedule should capture the assignment conditions that create those costs.
Confirm what happens if the project mobilises late, changes location or finishes before the employment term. Record any right or employer discretion concerning reassignment. Never count a temporary site allowance as permanent income. If family housing or schooling depends on that allowance, run the monthly comparison without it. Preserve written changes issued after acceptance because mobilisation instructions can alter practical value even when the headline salary remains unchanged.
Issue an acceptance file that can be checked later
The acceptance file should contain the final offer, attachments, clarifications, benefit policies, agreed start condition and the employee's comparison schedule. Identify the version and date accepted. Put unresolved points in a separate register and state who must answer them. Never silently convert an unanswered question into a benefit or favourable condition. If the employment contract or official record later differs, compare it with this file and obtain a written explanation before allowing the difference to pass into payroll.
Re-run the offer calculator whenever salary, allowance, housing, school, insurance, transport or family timing changes. Replace assumptions with quotations and issued documents. Keep the original result as a dated scenario so the household can see why the plan changed. The calculator does not assess legality, tax outside Qatar, exchange exposure or future approval. It gives one monthly cash view whose reliability depends on every input being current, correctly classified and supported.
Reconcile the final offer with the first issued payroll record
After mobilisation, compare the accepted schedule with the first employment record, payslip and salary credit. Check basic wage and allowances separately, then trace any housing, transport, school, flight or medical item. Record the payroll cut-off and explanation for a partial first month. Never allow a difference to become normal merely because the total credit appears close to the expected amount.
Keep approved expenses outside wage reconciliation. Raise discrepancies through a dated channel and preserve the reply. If the employer changes the project or benefit arrangement, update the offer calculator from the written variation and retain the prior case. This post-arrival check confirms whether the package used for the relocation decision is the package actually operating.
