Checking a Dubai job offer before you travel

The employer, salary, role and workplace should remain consistent from approved offer to employment contract.

Stop at the first document mismatch

Verify the offer barcode through the Ministry service. Match the employer's registered name to the entity that will sponsor and pay you. Confirm that the signatory uses a company address and that the project or recruitment contact can be reached through an independently found company channel.

Stop at the first document mismatch

The employer, salary, role and workplace should remain consistent from approved offer to employment contract.

Verify the offer barcode through the Ministry service. Match the employer's registered name to the entity that will sponsor and pay you. Confirm that the signatory uses a company address and that the project or recruitment contact can be reached through an independently found company channel.

An employer cannot replace the accepted offer terms in the employment contract without the worker's consent and a lawful change. Pause if the contract changes the employer, basic salary, allowances, title, workplace or benefits. Ask for a corrected document. Never sign first on the promise that payroll will fix it later.

Terms that must be explicit

A good offer answers the questions that affect money, time, mobility and family life.

Term: Employer; Minimum question: Which named company sponsors and pays me?; Construction-specific follow-up: Does employment survive completion or loss of the named project?.

Term: Role; Minimum question: What title and duties enter the contract?; Construction-specific follow-up: Is the position site, office, regional or project-based?.

Term: Workplace; Minimum question: What is the normal location?; Construction-specific follow-up: How often can I be moved between emirates or sites?.

Term: Pay; Minimum question: What is basic salary and what are allowances?; Construction-specific follow-up: Are site, hardship, overtime or shift amounts separate?.

Term: Hours; Minimum question: What is the weekly pattern?; Construction-specific follow-up: How are night work, rest days and deadlines handled?.

Term: Notice; Minimum question: What applies during and after probation?; Construction-specific follow-up: Who pays relocation or joining costs if the role ends?.

Term: Benefits; Minimum question: Who is covered and when?; Construction-specific follow-up: Are family medical, flights and school fees included?.

Compare total annual value, not the headline salary

Convert every cash payment and credible employer-paid benefit to an annual figure, then deduct the costs the package leaves with you.

Keep basic salary separate even when comparing total value. It is the reference for end-of-service gratuity. Treat discretionary bonuses as zero unless the written scheme gives a basis you can test. Value accommodation, transport, insurance and schooling at the cost you would otherwise pay, not at an optimistic marketing figure.

Check timing as well as value. An annual school reimbursement paid after proof of payment does not fund the deposit. A housing allowance paid monthly does not fund one or more rent cheques at move-in. Ask whether an advance is available and how it is recovered.

Probation and early exit

The first months carry different notice and repayment risks, so read every recovery clause before travel.

Probation may not exceed six months. A worker leaving the UAE during probation normally gives at least 14 days' written notice. A worker moving to another UAE employer during probation normally gives at least one month's written notice; the new employer may have to compensate recruitment or contracting costs unless agreed otherwise.

After probation, notice period must be at least 30 days and no more than 90 days. Ask how temporary accommodation, flights, shipment, joining bonuses, loans and visa costs are treated if either party ends employment early. A broad repayment clause can materially change the practical cost of accepting the offer.

Questions construction professionals should ask

Project conditions can alter the real working week and the usable value of an allowance.

Checklist: Is the contract with the consultant, contractor, joint venture or manpower supplier?; Is the assignment tied to one project, one client approval or one notice to proceed?; Who provides site transport, parking, fuel and Salik?; Are Friday, Saturday, night and public-holiday duties expected?; How is overtime recorded and approved?; Will the role require work outside Dubai or a second residence?; Are professional indemnity, memberships and visa classifications dealt with?; Who owns work product and what confidentiality restrictions continue after departure?.

Dubai offer points to resolve before acceptance

Treat the offer review as a commercial check before making a major financial commitment. Verify the approved offer and the named employing company before paying for travel, resigning or making housing promises. Compare the approved offer, draft employment contract and any assignment letter line by line. The folder should separate basic salary, allowances, benefits, probation, notice, repayment obligations and the first payroll date, because each item affects a different exposure.

Resolve every unclear benefit in writing. Housing, medical cover, school support, flights, temporary accommodation, relocation payment, transport, project travel, professional subscriptions and dependants should each have a payment route, cap, covered person and timing rule. Where the employer reimburses rather than pays directly, the household still funds the first payment. Keep the approved correction, email or policy extract with the accepted offer so that payroll and mobilisation can be checked against the same record after arrival.

Never count a discretionary bonus as guaranteed income, accept the phrase 'all inclusive' without a written breakdown, assume the client or project brand is the named employing company or rely on a recruiter to explain a document issued by another entity. If a repayment clause applies during probation or after early resignation, model it as a real liability before acceptance. A high headline package can become weak once first-month cash, housing timing and family benefits are tested.

Separate statutory salary from household value

Read the package in two columns. The first column should preserve the basic salary because it is relevant to the employment record and the stated end-of-service basis. The second should show cash allowances and employer-paid benefits that affect the household budget. Never merge the two merely because the offer presents one total. Record housing, transport, school support, medical cover, annual flights, temporary accommodation and relocation payments separately. For each item, identify who receives the money, when it is paid, which documents are required and whether it stops during leave, notice or a project transfer. A benefit that is described but has no eligible person, cap, timing or claim route should be treated as unanswered rather than valued optimistically.

The monthly comparison should use income that is guaranteed in writing. Exclude a discretionary bonus from the core affordability test. Value an employer-provided home, vehicle or insurance policy only after the employee has checked what is supplied and what remains payable. School support should be tested against the actual child's year group, eligible fee categories and reimbursement date. Annual flights should identify the eligible travellers and route. The resulting figure is not the headline package. It is the monthly cash left after the household pays realistic rent, school, health, transport and ordinary living costs, while maintaining enough reserve for the first rent payment and other charges that arise before payroll or reimbursement.

Price probation, repayment and project exposure

Early-exit exposure belongs in the offer decision. Read probation, notice and repayment clauses together. List every amount the employer may seek to recover, including temporary accommodation, flights, shipment, joining payment, training, loan or salary advance. Ask what event triggers repayment, whether the amount reduces over time and whether employer termination is treated differently from employee resignation. Never assume a broad sentence will be applied gently. If the household would be unable to repay the stated amount while also funding departure, the offer carries a cash exposure that should be reduced, capped or removed before acceptance.

Construction employment may also depend on a client approval, project award, notice to proceed or mobilisation date. Ask whether the role is permanent employment assigned to a project or employment tied to that project. Record what happens if the start is delayed, the client rejects the nomination, the project moves, the site closes or the appointment is transferred to another group entity. The answer affects notice exposure, housing term, school commitments and whether a spouse should resign. A six or twelve-month tenancy and non-refundable school charges should not be entered merely because the offer uses a long project description. The employing company's obligation and the household's commitments need to be tested separately.

Reconcile the accepted offer with later documents

Create a comparison sheet before accepting and keep it open until the final employment contract is signed. The rows should include employer name, role, workplace, basic salary, each allowance, benefits, probation, notice, working pattern, leave, travel, repayment terms and the first salary date. Enter the accepted wording in one column and the later contract wording in another. Mark every difference and obtain a corrected document or a written explanation from an authorised employer contact. Never use a message from an unrelated recruiter as the only answer to a difference in a Ministry-approved or employer-issued document.

Repeat the comparison when payroll and benefits start. The first payslip should show the expected salary components and deductions. The insurance card and schedule should match the people and cover promised. Housing, school and travel claims should follow the stated approval route and payment date. Keep submitted claims, supporting invoices and responses together. If an allowance was described as cash but is offered only as reimbursement, or a family benefit excludes a dependant, the practical package has changed. Raise the difference while the acceptance record is clear. The offer checker should therefore remain a live record through the first three salary and reimbursement cycles, not a document discarded after the visa process begins.

Price family mobilisation before accepting the headline package

Build a separate mobilisation schedule for the employee and every dependant. Record flights, temporary accommodation, document preparation, health cover, school applications, housing deposits, initial rent, utility deposits, transport and essential furnishing. Against each item, state whether the employer pays the supplier, reimburses the employee, provides a capped allowance or offers nothing. A benefit paid after a receipt does not fund the original due date. The household must therefore test the cash gap as well as the final package value.

Confirm the date on which dependant travel is permitted or practical. If the employee must complete local steps first, price the period of split-household costs and repeat travel. Ask who pays for an extension when processing runs beyond the stated mobilisation period. Keep conditional benefits outside the confirmed total until the condition is understood. The offer calculator is a monthly comparison tool; one-off relocation obligations belong in the cash calendar and must not be hidden by spreading them across salary without saying so.

Record project assignment and termination exposure

Ask where the role begins, whether it is tied to a named project and what happens if that assignment finishes, moves or pauses. Record ordinary workplace, site-travel treatment, working pattern and any supplied vehicle or accommodation. A title and monthly salary cannot show the household cost of travelling to changing projects. Obtain written treatment of project allowances and confirm whether they form part of ordinary salary, reimbursement or a temporary assignment payment.

Read notice, probation, repayment and benefit-end provisions together. Identify any relocation, training, flight, accommodation or joining sum that the employer may seek to recover and the event said to trigger it. Never decide enforceability from a summary page. The immediate budgeting point is that a disputed deduction or early end can remove cash when rent, school and travel commitments remain. Keep a reserve scenario that excludes uncertain bonus and allowance payments and includes the household's known exit obligations.

Issue a written acceptance record with unresolved points separated

Before acceptance, create a short schedule containing the exact salary components, start condition, workplace, working pattern, probation position, notice, leave, insurance, dependant support, flights, relocation payments and any project allowance. Against each line, cite the offer or written clarification. Put unresolved points in a separate list and never silently convert them into assumptions. If the employer later issues a contract or mobilisation instruction, compare it with this schedule character by character for names, amounts and dates.

Acceptance should identify the version accepted and preserve all attachments. Keep the final record outside a link that may expire. The calculator result can support a decision, but the signed text checks the bargain and the household remains responsible for cash timing. Re-run the comparison if any component changes before travel, particularly housing, school, health or project transport support.
